From Universal's _East Side of Heaven_ , this sweet number was ideally suited to Bing's recording artist and film persona. Taken at a jaunty tempo perhaps not conducive to restful slumber, the Donahue treatment succeeds on its own terms, with Paula contributing a very pleasing vocal and tenor saxist Stewie MacKay and clarinetist Phil Alavero adding good solos.

I've never felt that George Robert's singing was in the same universe as that of his brother, Harry Lillis "Bing," ten years his senior. Still, Bob, having worked with the orchestras of Anson Weeks and the Dorsey Brothers (incurring the wrath of Tommy for his vocal shortcomings) was chosen as "leader" of a cooperative outfit largely comprising former Ben Pollack orch sidemen, and made an amiable frontman for the powerhouse band. The lads had wanted Jack Teagarden, himself once a Pollack star, but the trombonist had recently signed a five-year contract with Paul Whiteman. This side happens to be one of my favourites to feature Bob, simply because I like the tune and I think our vocalist sounds earnest. Listen for his _clear_ (Since you've been gone, it's all very clear") 1:56. A little hiccup? I don't think that was intentional. Eddie Miller's tenor in the first chorus is lovely.

I became acquainted with this cute number through the great Fats Waller's winning treatment. In a different way, the Lopez version stomps! I like Johnny's brash vocal, which suits the ebullient mood of the lyric.

Though I do associate this sentimental number most closely with the Tommy Dorsey treatment, because the melody and lyric sound as if they'd been fashioned for Jack Leonard's talents, I'm very fond of Una Mae's lightly swinging rendition. A fine composer herself, Ms Carlisle had a distinctive and appealing vocal approach; she deserves to be more widely known today for her work as both singer and composer. Here, she is joined by the always recognisable --and busy! -- John Kirby Sextet. Pianist Billy Kyle and alto saxist Russell Procope solo stylishly.

This theme of whirlwind romances, sometimes international, that go kerflooey was a popular one, as we've seen. Our male protagonist vividly describes the romantic scene and the beauty that bewitched him, sings of his departure and return -- to find that she's wed another. I mean, how much variety can we expect in a pop song? "Under Blue Canadian Skies" failed to match the success of this tale of Mexican passion, widely recorded in its time and later. Buddy, in both ballad and swing mode, is utterly magnificent in his lusty rendering of this sad, though melodically catchy, tale.

Dating to '25, this good old one had entered the "Jazz Warhorse" realm by this time -- and still had plenty of life, as we hear. Ace arranger Van Alexander, who had come to prominence through his writing for Chick Webb's band, swings this number up in fine '39 style, with Phyllis delivering a vocal with pizzazz.

Both this song and side are enchanting! I'm sure much of today's youth would find this lyric hokey as heck, but I really love the atmospheric ballads of this type from the Golden Era before I was born. Russ' vocal, too, is wonderful. He puts the romantic story over in charming fashion, with lush support from the band.

Billie sang with the Basie orch in late '37, but was prohibited from recording with the outfit, as she was not signed to Decca, as Basie was. However, Basie's men were free to record with her at Vocalion, and thus there are many sides, all of them gems, on which Lady Day is accompanied by key members from the band -- superb and extremely sympathetic musicians. The one exception here is pianist Teddy Wilson, Ms Holiday's usual keyboard ace. This standard, an early Mercer number, is so well suited to Billie's interpretive strengths -- the song sounds as if it had been written for her! While touring with Basie, Billie became close to Lester Young and Buck Clayton -- the pals in fact called themselves "The Unholy Three"! Lester and Buck solo masterfully on this side, in support of a flawless vocal.

Introduced by Mary Martin in the evidently erroneously titled _Nice Goin'_ , a pre-Broadway flopperoo, this slangy affair is right up Mildred's alley. A noted slinger of slang, who has been credited as the first person to use _bad_ in place of the adjective _good_ , Ms Bailey sometimes exhibited her wry sense of humour on record, always with subtlety. Her favourite piano man, Teddy Wilson, is on hand, as well as Ben Webster, then the tenor man in Teddy's newly-formed touring big band.

    • @Trombonology

@@swingman5635 No source lists the full personnel but, as Teddy had his new outfit on the road by late '39, it's entirely possible that in addition to him and Ben, there are others from the crew -- perhaps Pete Clark or Rudy Powell on clarinet and Shorty Baker or Doc Cheatham on trumpet. The orch's first studio session took place in Dec. of '39, so the initial sides would have appeared in '40.

Alan has one of the greatest voices ever. His later Pop efforts dont remotely show his operatic range and Power. His Coral hits and his involvement with early Rock and Roll are a small part of his 40 year career. He was also a journalist and columnist(!) He was ALSO deeply involved with a num ber of patriotic organizations and events. He was a great artist a good friend.

Though today the great Billy Hill is probably best known for the standard, "The Glory of Love," aficionados associate the songwriter more closely with his many wonderful, picturesque cowboy tunes, such as "The Last Round-Up, "Wagon Wheels" and "Empty Saddles." Our genial Mr Robertson sounds entirely at home in the lyric's rustic surroundings, and the instrumental support is splendid, with cornetist Bobby Hackett; clarinetist Sid Tucker; guitarist Frank Victor; trombonist Al Philburn and pianist Frank Signorelli stepping out in exemplary fashion.

I've always loved this bit of revisionist "history," one in a minor sub-genre in pop of the day. Freed's lyric is priceless! -- and well-pared with Bernie Hanighen's music. Trombonist Pee Wee Hunt takes on the story with his characteristic gusto and good humour, with the Casa Lomans participating in the lyric's "hoedown."

From WB's _Hollywood Hotel_ , this number may be lightweight in comparison with, say, "Too Marvelous For Words," perhaps the most famous Whiting-Mercer collab, but nevertheless it's nice; in those days, even the relative trifles were good -- vastly more sophisticated than the pop of later decades. Dolly, in her distinctive way, does really a lovely job on this sweet tune.

Composer Irene Wilson, one of Billie's close friends, was the wife of pianist Teddy Wilson, who of course was among the most noted Holiday collaborators, recording extensively with the vocalist in the '30s. This harmonically sophisticated number is a beauty that provided Billie an opportunity to display her sure ear. Arthur Herzog, Jr. wrote lyrics for number of songs fashioned for Lady Day's talents. As we hear, he had a very good sense of Billie's emotional tone as an interpreter. The vocal here is one of her best, IMO, and the accompaniment could not be more attuned. Trumpeter Charlie Shavers and pianist Sonny White shine!

The DeRose-Parish team went from purple -- a "Deep Purple" -- to blue ... unfortunately not to nearly as memorable effect. This number is blandly pretty, but neither it nor this treatment, despite a good vocalist and band, has much sparkle. Romantic ballads, I'm afraid, were simply not the Bradley orch's long suit -- as featured drummer Ray McKinley concurred.
